After doing a research on the type of sand being used out there, the grain size and quality,…Well let say having a substrate in your reef is more beneficial than not I am sure there are some people will tell you otherwise, don’t take my word for it just research it and there is your answer.

All different aragonite reef sand that we have found some pros and cons.

Caco3reef aragonite sand, the purest aragonite for you saltwater tank. we get our sand from a well known worldwide distributor, strictly for naturally occurring of oolitic aragonite sand  are found on the seabed in the Bahamas. It is sugar grain size 0.4 to 1.3mm range, thoroughly washed and ready to be placed in any type of aquarium. why did we pick that grain size. caco3reef aragonite sand is well known for its round shape grain, the best size for your sand sifting fish, you only need no more than 2″ for caco3reef sand bed a it populates well with beneficial bacteria and all types of pods,…

Silica type sand, invertebrates and sand-sifters may have a hard time with it as it has sharp edges.

Dolomite sand,I have personally used it in the past, it does not buffer the reef contain metal fragments embedded into the sand grain

Queried ancient calcium sand, this type of sand is to a degree ok in some stores as it is cheep to get and sell it is millions of years old and heavily condensed. It available as a fine grain and over 80% is powder calcium that some call it aragonite sand

Calcium carbonate sand, if you find this type of sand it maybe ok to use only in a fish only aquariums or i should say predator fish only aquariums and same as Silica sand has rough edges.

The list goes on,… if you have any questions about sand you might think its reef safe, detail your research, do some testing and most likely someone else gone down that road. be careful for what you are buying for your reef it will cost you at the end.
